Sixty years ago, local citizens of Austrian descent came together and, nostalgic for their lovely country and wanting to speak their native language, formed the Austrian Society of Montreal.

Here is a quote from the very first program from the very first Austrian Ball: “Those who joined the Austrian Society since its founding were motivated by a desire to dedicate a segment of their lives to promoting a greater degree of understanding between the people of their old and new homeland, to help less fortunate new Canadians from Austria, and last but not least to be better citizens of this country by enriching the fabric of its daily life with their own proud cultural heritage.”

Times have changed, and the members of the Austrian Society are now from many varied backgrounds, all with a deep appreciation for the music, art, and culture of Austria and with a continued commitment to philanthropy.

SOS Children’s Villages was the beneficiary at the first Ball and is still a beneficiary today. Over the years the Society has organized countless events, many of which continue to this day: the Austrian National Day celebrations, ski days, movie nights, the traditional Viennese Heurigen, concerts and musical events, and of course the wonderful Viennese Ball of Montreal.
