The emperor Franz Josef at the ball in the Redoutensaale of the Hofburg in Vienna by Wilhelm Gause, 1853-1916
On November 16th, 2019 the Viennese Ball of Montréal will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Vienna State Opera.
The Opera opened on Vienna’s Ringstrasse on May 25th, 1869 with a performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. The Emperor Franz Josef and Empress Elisabeth were in attendance on that glittering night long ago.
With 60 different operas and ballets and 150 performances per year it has the worlds largest repertoire. It also has the only orchestra of international standing that performs every single day!
Over the years the Vienna State Opera has seen countless performances of operas  and ballets, world premieres, famous conductors and directors, and, of course, the spectacular Vienna Opera Ball, the pinnacle of Vienna’s legendary Ball season.
Today the Vienna State opera remains at the centre of cultural  life in Vienna and in Austria and is a symbol of music and art throughout the world. Happy Birthday!!!
